Gapyeong & Chuncheon Day Trip from Seoul 2026 – Nami Island, Rail Bike, and More

An hour from Seoul, and it feels like a completely different country. That's Gapyeong and Chuncheon — the stretch of Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do that runs northeast of the city along the Bukhan River, where tree-lined islands, old railway tracks, and a river you can walk above the surface of all sit within 90 minutes of each other.
This guide covers how to plan a day trip or overnight from Seoul to Gapyeong and Chuncheon in 2026: what to see, how to get there, what things actually cost, and how to put the pieces together efficiently.
Getting There from Seoul
By Train — The Right Way
The fastest and most convenient option is the ITX-Cheongchun (ITX-청춘) express train from Cheongnyangni Station (청량리역) or Yongsan Station (용산역) in Seoul directly to Gapyeong Station (가평역).
Price: approximately ₩6,000 · Journey time: about 60 minutes · Important: book in advance on the Korail website, especially on weekends — it sells out.
There's also a regular subway option on the Gyeongchun Line from Sangbong Station (상봉역), which takes 80–90 minutes and costs around ₩2,500 with a T-money card. Fine if you're on a tight budget and have time. Not fine if you want to maximize your day.
Getting Around Once There
From Gapyeong Station to the Nami Island ferry, you still have about 2km to cover. The easiest option: take the 10-4 Gapyeong City Bus from across the street from the station (₩1,500, about 10 minutes) or taxi (₩5,000, 5 minutes).
What to Do — The Main Attractions
1. Nami Island (남이섬) — The Most Famous Stop
The island is small — you can walk the entire perimeter in about 90 minutes. The main attraction is the scenery itself: towering trees that form natural tunnels, and the combination of water, forest, and mountains in every direction.
They call the admission fee a "visa" because Nami Island declared itself the Naminara Republic — an autonomous territory with its own stamps, currency, and ambassador. It's a bit theatrical, but it works. The island itself earns the reputation.
Admission (2026): ₩16,000 for adults, includes round-trip ferry
Ferry: Runs 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM, every 10–20 minutes at peak hours
Zip-line option: ₩44,000 one-way (940 meters across the river at up to 80 km/h) — you still take the ferry back, but the aerial view of the island is exceptional
Best time to visit: Spring (cherry blossoms along the tree tunnels) and autumn (full color change). Summer is hot and humid. Winter snow visits are beautiful but require warmer layers than most people plan for.
Don't go on a Saturday afternoon expecting peace. Go on a weekday morning, spring for the zip-wire, rent a bike, and see the real Nami Island.
2. Gangchon Rail Bike (강촌레일파크) — Old Railway, River Views
The Gangchon Rail Bike runs along a decommissioned section of the Gyeongchun railway line, with the North Han River on one side and forested hillsides on the other. There's a tunnel section partway through where the lights go on and music plays — genuinely more memorable than it sounds.
Getting there: Gangchon Station (강촌역) on the Gyeongchun Line, or from Gapyeong by bus or taxi. Bus 60-10 from Gapyeong Station Exit 1 — about 6 minutes.
Tickets: ₩35,000 for 2-seater / ₩48,000 for 4-seater
Duration: Approximately 40–50 minutes for the full course
The bikes are electric-assisted, which matters more than it sounds on a hot day. Weekends book up. If you're planning around a specific date, booking the rail bike time slot in advance is worth the extra step.
3. Soyang River Sky Walk (소양강 스카이워크) — Free, Chuncheon
A glass-floored walkway extending over the Soyang River in Chuncheon — no cost, no booking required. On clear days the water below is transparent enough that it's genuinely vertiginous.
It's a 10-minute stop rather than a destination in itself, but if you're in Chuncheon it fits naturally into the morning before moving to other stops. Best visited on clear days; the effect disappears on overcast ones.
Getting there: Chuncheon Station (춘천역) by ITX or subway, then taxi or bus

4. Chuncheon Dakgalbi (춘천 닭갈비) — The Meal That Defines the City
Dakgalbi — spicy marinated chicken stir-fried on an iron griddle with rice cakes, cabbage, and sweet potato — originated in Chuncheon and remains the city's defining food. Any restaurant in front of the Nami Island ferry area will have dakgalbi. Just remember to try it near Gapyeong Station or near the ferry.
For the Chuncheon version specifically, the Myeong-dong Dakgalbi Street (명동 닭갈비 골목) in downtown Chuncheon has a full block of restaurants that have been doing this since the 1970s. The standard finish is asking for fried rice (볶음밥) to be cooked in the remaining sauce at the end — this is not optional.

5. Bonus: Petit France (쁘띠프랑스) — Photo Stop
Petit France is a small French-themed cultural village built on a hillside overlooking Cheongpyeong Lake. It's a cluster of pastel-coloured buildings designed to look like a Provençal village, with small galleries, a marionette theatre, a music box museum, and photo spots everywhere. The Little Prince theme runs throughout. Admission: ₩12,000 for adults.
My honest take: Petit France is designed for photos. If that's the intention, it delivers. If you want cultural substance, skip it and spend the time at Nami Island or Chuncheon.
Day Trip vs. Overnight — Which Makes More Sense?
Day trip (from Seoul): Nami Island + Rail Bike is the standard combination. Realistic if you take the early ITX and leave by 8:00–8:30 AM. Back in Seoul by 7:00–8:00 PM.
Overnight (Gapyeong or Chuncheon): Add the Soyang River Sky Walk, dakgalbi dinner in Chuncheon, and a morning walk before the day-trippers arrive. Pension and glamping accommodations along the North Han River in Gapyeong are the main options — most include barbecue setups. Budget ₩80,000–150,000 per room on weekends.
For first-time visitors to the area, a day trip is enough to cover the highlights. An overnight trip is for people who want to see what the area is like when it's not full of day-trippers.

Practical Notes
Nami Island ferry: Runs until 9:00 PM but the island atmosphere drops significantly after 6:00 PM when day visitors leave. If you're staying overnight in Gapyeong, the early morning and evening on the island are the best windows.
ITX-Cheongchun booking: The train sells out on weekends, especially during spring and autumn peak seasons. Book through the Korail website (www.korail.com) at least a few days ahead. The English interface on Korail is functional.
T-money card: Essential for buses and subway connections throughout the trip. Available at any convenience store in Seoul.
Weather window: Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) are when the area is at its best. Summer remains busy despite the heat. Winter snow trips to Nami Island are a niche experience worth planning if the forecast is right.
One of the Most Accessible Nature Day Trips in Korea
The combination of easy train access from Seoul, low admission prices, and genuine natural beauty makes the Gapyeong–Chuncheon corridor one of the most consistently recommended day trips from Seoul in 2026. Nami Island draws the most attention, but the rail bike and Chuncheon's food scene round out what could otherwise be just a photo stop into a full day worth taking.
