Nami Island Day Trip from Seoul 2026 – Complete Guide with Chuncheon, Rail Bike, and Dakgalbi

Hi there, this is Ssenea. 😎

An hour from Seoul by train, Nami Island sits in the middle of a river where the Bukhan River widens into a lake-like expanse south of Chuncheon. It's a small island — you can walk a complete circuit in under two hours — but the tree-lined paths are some of the most photographed scenery in Korea, and the surrounding Gapyeong and Chuncheon area adds enough to make a genuinely full day out of it.

This guide covers how to get there, what to do on Nami Island itself, how to combine it with the Gangchon Rail Bike and Chuncheon's dakgalbi for an optimised full-day trip, and what to know about timing and tickets for 2026.

Getting from Seoul to Nami Island

By Train — The Best Option

The ITX-Cheongchun (ITX-청춘) train is the most practical way to reach Gapyeong, the station closest to Nami Island. Trains run from Yongsan Station (용산역) and Cheongnyangni Station (청량리역).

Departure Destination Duration Notes
Yongsan Station Gapyeong Station ~60 min ITX-Cheongchun
Cheongnyangni Station Gapyeong Station ~40 min ITX-Cheongchun

Trains run roughly every 30–60 minutes from around 6:00 AM, with the last return from Chuncheon around 10:00 PM. Weekend and autumn morning trains fill up fast — book through the Korail app or at the station kiosk at least a day ahead.

Pro tip: Sit on the left side of the train heading from Seoul. After Cheongnyangni, the route follows the Bukhan River through a valley, and the left window gets the water views for most of the journey.

You can also take the Gyeongchun Line subway (경춘선) all the way from Sangbong Station (상봉역) or Cheongnyangni Station to Gapyeong — no seat reservation required, but it takes longer.

From Gapyeong Station to Nami Island

From Gapyeong Station, take the Gapyeong Tourist Bus or the city bus to Gapyeong Wharf (가평 선착장). The bus stop is directly across from the station exit. Journey time is about 10 minutes.

From the wharf, you reach Nami Island by ferry or zipline. The ferry takes five minutes and runs every 10–30 minutes depending on time of day. First ferry at 7:30 AM.

By Car

Seoul to Gapyeong is approximately 60–70 minutes via the Seoul-Chuncheon Expressway (서울춘천고속도로). Tolls are around ₩4,500 each way.

Parking at Gapyeong Wharf is available. Having a car makes the day significantly more flexible — you can add the Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원) and Petite France without worrying about bus schedules.

Nami Island — What to Know

Address: 1 Namiseom-gil, Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do
Opening hours: 08:00–21:00 daily, year-round
Admission (2026): ₩16,000 per person (includes round-trip ferry)
Zipline (Skyline Zip Wire): Family Course ₩55,000 / Adventure Course ₩58,000

Getting onto the Island

Ferry: Included in the ₩16,000 admission ticket. Five minutes across the water. Runs every 10–30 minutes from 7:30 AM to 9:45 PM.

Zipline (Skyline Zip Wire): One-way only — you glide nearly 1km from an 80-meter-high tower at speeds up to 80km/h across the Bukhan River. Return is by ferry. Book in advance — slots sell out, especially on weekends and in autumn. Arrive at least 20 minutes before your booking time. Missed slots are non-refundable.

What to Do on Nami Island

Nami Island is small enough that you don't need a plan — you can wander and find most things naturally. Budget 2–3 hours, which is enough to walk the full circuit and take your photos without rushing.

Metasequoia Lane (메타세쿼이아길): The island's signature path — a long straight walkway bordered by towering metasequoia trees that form a cathedral-like canopy. In autumn the leaves turn gold; in winter bare branches create a different but equally striking effect. This is the image most people associate with Nami Island.

Ginkgo Tree Lane (은행나무길): A second tree-lined path where the ginkgos turn brilliant yellow in late October. Best visited in mid-to-late October for peak colour.

Riverside Path (강변길): A quieter walk along the river edge, with water views and reed beds. Good for getting away from the more photographed central areas.

Winter Sonata Statue: A bronze statue of the two lead characters from the 2002 Korean drama Winter Sonata, which was partially filmed on Nami Island and is largely responsible for the island's international fame. The Gongsaengwon Garden area near the statue has good photo spots.

UNICEF Garden: Nami Island has a long partnership with UNICEF, and several areas of the island carry this theme — sculptures, installations, and signage referencing global childhood.

Practical Notes for Nami Island

Food and drink are available on the island, but prices are high for what's offered. The standard advice is to eat before arriving or save your appetite for Chuncheon's dakgalbi afterward. The island does have good coffee.

Tour buses from Seoul arrive en masse from around 10:30 AM. If you take the first ITX from Seoul and reach Gapyeong by 8:30–9:00 AM, you'll have the island near-empty for the first hour. This timing is particularly valuable in autumn, when the gap between a peaceful walk and a crowded one is about ninety minutes.

Gangchon Rail Bike — 8.5km Through River Valleys

Location: Gimyujeong Station (김유정역) → Gangchon Station (강촌역)
How to get there: Gyeongchun Line subway directly from Seoul, or one stop from Gapyeong on the same line
Operating hours: 09:00–17:30 (Mar–Oct), reduced hours in winter / runs at hourly intervals
Price: 2-person bike ₩30,000 / 4-person bike ₩40,000
Duration: approximately 40–50 minutes (human-powered, no engine — downhill sections give you a break)

The Gangchon Rail Bike is one of those activities that sounds tourist-trap until you actually do it. The 8.5km course follows a decommissioned railway track along the Bukhan River valley — through tunnels, over bridges, past mountains — and the scenery is genuinely impressive. Running Man and We Got Married filmed here, which is either a recommendation or a warning depending on your taste in Korean variety shows.

At the end of the rail bike course at Gangchon Station, a small "romantic train" takes you back to Gimyujeong Station (about 10 minutes). Note that Gangchon Station on the rail bike course is not the same as the working Gangchon subway station — a free shuttle bus connects the end point back to Gimyujeong Station, where you can continue by train.

Booking: Advance booking is strongly recommended, especially on weekends and in the October–November peak season. Book through the Gangchon Rail Park official website or via Naver.

Chuncheon — Dakgalbi and the City of Lakes

Chuncheon (춘천) is 30 minutes further by train from Gapyeong — a city of about 280,000 built around a landscape of rivers and lakes that has earned it the nickname "City of Lakes." Most day-trippers from Seoul don't make it past Nami Island and Gapyeong, which means Chuncheon itself is noticeably less crowded.

The reason to come to Chuncheon is dakgalbi (닭갈비).

Dakgalbi — Chuncheon's Signature Dish

Dakgalbi is spicy stir-fried chicken — marinated boneless chicken pieces cooked at high heat with cabbage, sweet potato, rice cakes (tteok), green onion, and gochujang paste. It's served in a large flat pan at the table and eaten communally. At the end, you add rice and stir it into the remaining sauce to make fried rice (볶음밥) — this final step is arguably the best part.

Eating dakgalbi in Chuncheon is not the same as eating it in Seoul. Chuncheon is where the dish was born and developed in the 1960s, and the restaurants in the city's Myeong-dong Dakgalbi Street (명동닭갈비골목) have been doing it for decades. The street has around 30 dakgalbi restaurants in a compact area — most are equally good, and all of them are focused on one thing.

What to order:

  • Dakgalbi (닭갈비): the main dish, per person
  • Makguksu (막국수): cold buckwheat noodles — the standard accompaniment that cuts through the spice
  • Add mozzarella cheese topping (치즈 추가) if you want something richer

How to get there: Chuncheon Station is the final stop on the ITX-Cheongchun from Seoul, or one more stop past Gapyeong on the Gyeongchun Line. Myeong-dong Dakgalbi Street is walkable from the station.

Optional Add-Ons — Petite France and Garden of Morning Calm

Both are in Gapyeong, accessible by the Gapyeong Tourist Bus that runs between attractions.

Petite France (쁘띠프랑스): A French-themed village built into a hillside above the river, with colourful buildings, a theatre, and small museums covering French culture. It appeared in My Love from the Star (별에서 온 그대). Entrance is around ₩12,000. Worth an hour if you have time; not essential if the day is already full.

Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원): A large botanical garden with over 20 themed sections covering 330,000 square metres. Best in spring (April, when most flowers are at peak) and in winter evenings when the Lighting Festival runs. Entrance is around ₩11,000. Budget 1.5–2 hours.

If you're adding both of these to Nami Island and Gangchon Rail Bike, you'll need a car or a full 12-hour day. Pick one or save them for a separate Gapyeong trip.

What to Know by Season

Season Nami Island Rail Bike Notes
Spring (Apr–May) Cherry blossoms, quiet crowds Good conditions Best for first-timers
Summer (Jun–Aug) Lush green, hot and humid Can be hot Go early, stay hydrated
Autumn (Oct–Nov) Peak — ginkgo and maple colour Ideal Most crowded; book everything ahead
Winter (Dec–Feb) Snow-dusted paths, very quiet Limited hours Beautiful if you dress for it

Autumn is peak season by a significant margin. The ginkgo trees on Nami Island typically peak in late October; the metasequoias hold colour into early November. If you're visiting in October or November, book the ITX train, the zipline (if doing it), and the rail bike at least a week ahead on weekends.

Practical Tips

Book the ITX in advance on weekends. Morning trains — especially the 7:30 and 8:00 AM departures from Yongsan — fill up completely on autumn weekends. The Korail app (코레일 앱) handles booking in English; you can also book at any station kiosk.

Arrive at Nami Island early. The difference between arriving at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM is enormous in peak season. Tour buses deliver crowds in waves from 10:30 AM onward.

The rail bike is human-powered. It's not strenuous — the terrain is mostly flat with some gentle downhill stretches — but it's not a passive ride either. Four-person bikes are more efficient if you have the numbers; two-person bikes feel lighter and faster.

Food on Nami Island is overpriced. The island has cafes and restaurants but they charge tourist prices for average food. Save your appetite for Chuncheon dakgalbi, which is genuinely one of the best meals in the Seoul day-trip radius.

Return trains from Chuncheon fill up in the evening. If you're planning to return after 6:00 PM, book the return train before you leave Seoul. The last ITX from Chuncheon is around 10:00 PM.

The Right Way to Do This Day Trip

The standard mistake is spending too long on Nami Island and missing Chuncheon entirely. Nami Island deserves 2–3 hours — not a full day. The tree-lined paths are beautiful, the photos are great, and then you're done. The rail bike and dakgalbi are what round the day out into something that actually feels complete.

Leave Seoul early, get to the island before the crowds, walk it properly, do the rail bike in the afternoon, and eat dakgalbi in Chuncheon before the evening return train. That's the day.
